A question I get asked a lot is when is the best time for couples portraits on a wedding day. Generally speaking, I like to be flexible and fit in with whatever the schedule for your day is. But if you want to know my expert opinion, I actually love to split the couples portraits into two sessions.
The first one would come during the drinks reception. Even though the couples portraits are one of my favourite times of the day to photograph, I don’t want to monopolise your time and keep you from celebrating with your friends and family. We don’t want your guests drinking all of those cocktails that you’ve paid for without you! A quick 15-20 minutes is perfect. Plus, it gives you time to take a breath together and let the fact that you’ve just tied the knot sink in a little bit.
The second session would be at golden hour, the dreamy hour before the sun sets when the sun is low in the sky and casts a beautiful golden hue. It’s incredibly flattering light and will give a lovely warm hue to your photos.
If you’re having a winter wedding, obviously this will happen much earlier in the day. In which case, maybe your two sessions would be straight after the ceremony and a first look. But more on first looks in another blog post!
